Who What Where
Sitemeter has a cool new feature called "By Location" that will let you see not just the country of the visitors to this site, but their city as well. So I've been happily checking out where everybody's from. Some places - Clifton NJ, Newcastle-upon-Tyne - are not totally unexpected, but are still pretty gratifying (hi guys! Thanks for visiting!). Others (Malta? Mauritius?) are a little more perplexing.
Then there's Poland. Over the past week I've gotten hits from towns named Swidnica, Grabowno Wielkie, Bytom, and Plac. What's up with this? Has Fedora 3 been published in Polish? Have the inhabitants of Wroclaw suddenly developed an interest in Bonnie and Clyde?
I can only think of one person from the Far Ost whom I know, a friend of my friend Susan named Jana Tomanova. But she was from Prague, and I only met her twice ten years ago. I mean, of course she still remembers me - who wouldn't - but I doubt she's been spreading my name around Krakow and Gdansk.
And it's my name that they're looking for. This site is the #1 hit for "Graham Powell" at Google.pl. But why me? And why now?
There can be only one explanation: the Pole with soul has told his distant relatives all what a great new writer I am. And BTW, how did a Pole get named Duane? Seriously!
The Dead Live. The New York Jets have announced that Vinnie Testaverde will start at quarterback this weekend. After watching him helm the Dallas Cowboys last season, all I can say is that Jets fans better hope he uses his right arm only to hand the ball to Curtis Martin.
