They Fought The Law
A few days ago Ray posted the playlist he listened to while writing his new novel Wolf Tickets. On the list: "I Fought The Law" by Colin Farrell. As it happens, I had just downloaded the original version by the Bobby Fuller Four from iTunes.
The song still rocks. It's known now as a punk anthem (thanks to The Clash's cover version) and has been played by everyone from Green Day to, well, Colin Farrell. It was originally recorded by the post-Buddy Holly Crickets, and made Bobby Fuller a big star back in 1965.
He didn't get to enjoy his success. The LA police found him dead in his car. He'd been beaten and had inhaled fumes from an open gasoline can. Fuller's death was officially ruled a suicide, which can only mean he was screwing the mayor's daughter. Or wife.
The really shocking thing about all this: The Clash covered IFTL 15 years or so after it came out. That was over 25 years ago.
