Mimetic
Okay, Gerald So has lured me out of grumpy lurkdom by tagging me with the latest meme, so let's go:
(1) Imagine it’s 2015. You are visiting the library at a major research university. You go over to a computer terminal (or whatever it is they use in 2015) that gives you immediate access to any book or journal article on any topic you want. What do you look up? In other words, what do you hope somebody will have written in the meantime?
I wouldn't need to look up myself - at the current pace, my book won't be finished until 2018 - but I would definitely see how some of me mates were getting along. Then I'd check out GATES OF DOOM: How Microsoft Tried To Take Over Everything - And Nearly Succeeded! Forward by Linus Torvalds.
(2) What is the strangest thing you’ve ever heard or seen at a conference? No names, please. Refer to “Professor X” or “Ms. Y” if you must. Double credit if you were directly affected. Triple if you then said or did something equally weird.
I was having dinner with a group including Madamoiselle Z when she admitted that, upon first seeing a man naked, she had more than once thought to herself, "Good Lord, how am I going to fit THAT in there?"
Strange, women never say this to me. I guess they're too awestruck to speak.
(3) Name a writer, scholar, or otherwise worthy person you admire so much that meeting him or her would probably reduce you to awestruck silence.
George Pelecanos, no question. And Ringo Starr.
(4) What are two or three blogs or other Web sites you often read that don’t seem to be on many people’s radar?
Well, Paul Guyot seems to be getting pretty well known around the bogosphere (sic), but he's new to me, as is his nemesis David Montgomery. And lately I've started reading Steven Torres' blog.
