Can I Speak To You About An Important Business Opportunity?
The other day I read on Rickard's blog about a Big Name Author [BNA] laying the smackdown on a Pushy Self-Absorbed New Author [PSANA]. While this was funny enough in itself, together with the ongoing debate over BSP got me thinking. Why do people like this piss us off so much, and why don't they realize it?
After thinking for all of ten seconds, I realized that these people remind me of no one so much as Amway salesmen. I made the mistake of agreeing to sit through their presentation once, and my wife committed me to a pitch by another MLM another time, and it didn't take long too see what the scam was: A) You make money not by selling a damn thing, but by signing up others, and B) they encourage you to recruit your friends and family.
Thus, the people who sell Amway, or push their book in your face every single chance they get, are people who view any relationship as a potential business relationship, and milk it for all the cash they can. When suckers like me realize we're just giant walking wallets to these people we generally lose interest in what they have to say. Although usually I don't have the balls that [BNA] showed in telling [PSANA] where to get off.
So: I will mention when I have a story or a book out, and I will suggest that you might like to read it, but if you're a friend of mine, or even a friendly acquaintance, I promise not to use that relationship strictly for my own benefit. So there.
