A Cautionary Tale
Kids, don't do drugs. Just don't. Drugs suck up all the time and attention that you could be spending at other, more worthwhile pursuits, plus they can land you in jail, plus they can kill you.
Let's say that you started in high school. Nothing serious, just booze and pot, having fun, you know? But you go off to college, where your parents can't watch you even a little, and you hang around with people like yourself, and none of those people will ever say, "Dude, I don't think you should do that." So you get in deeper and deeper.
But hey, you pull your shit together and get through college, and then med school, and presto!, you're a doctor. I don't know if you like doctoring or if you hate it, but either way it's a huge obligation, working those 36-hour shifts, always being on call - the pressure is enormous. So, maybe a little hit to help you wind down...
But drugs cost more than money. Before you know it, you've lost your license, landed in rehab, maybe even jail. Then you're sitting in a halfway house on New Year's Eve. You'll never work again at your chosen profession. You look at the hash you've made of your life, you add up your propects for the future, and you can't see how you'll go on.
So you decide not to. Which is just a damn shame, because you still had friends, even if you didn't know it.
