Baseball, Baby!

Last night was one of the most important baseball games in the history of human sport. Never has a team played with such tenacity, such skill, and had so much fun doing it. From the top of the order to the lowest bench-warmer, they all worked hard and deserved to take home the W.

Oh, and the Red Sox won, too.

The other team was the (Fort Worth) University Little League Twins, who last night beat the Cardinals 12-10 in the first round of the playoffs. The Twins trailed three different times in the game, and each time came back to take the lead. Among the other heroes was outfielder Joseph Powell, who singled sharply, then was intentionally sent into a rundown by the first base coach, allowing a runner to score from third.

The team was short a volunteer last night, so I got to be Bench Coach / Head Cheerleader / Nanny / Dugout Attendant, and it was a blast. I did my best to keep the kids focused on the task at hand, but they're kids, what can you do?

Tonight they faced the Brewers, a team that beat them twice last week, and came away with another win, 8 to 6. The Twins shut them out in the bottom of the fifth (the last inning) to preserve the win. Tomorrow night we play for the championship against the Braves, far and away the best team in the league. But we played them tough last time, and like I tell my son, when the game starts tomorrow, the score is zero to zero. If you've got any spare mojo laying around, send some my way.

Y'all welcome - Morrissey! Morrissey takes a beating from many in the crime fiction community, egged on by Dennis Lehane, and I thought that way at one time as well, but I've come around and now think that they made some pretty good music back in the 80s, once again reinforcing my belief that the best music is the music I'm not hearing. And Morrissey and Johnny Marr got their stage names from a Cornell Woolrich novel.

And this week Morrissey's in town, playing at - the Will Rogers Coliseum? Home of the Fort Worth Stock Show? Next door to the Cowgirl Hall of Fame? I wonder how he looks in a Stetson.

The Jersey Job, Days 2, 3, And 4. I had a big post all planned out, but hell, it boils down to: got up early, everything was broken, after we fixed it we were 6 hours behind, stayed there 16 hours, we came, we saw, we kicked its ass! Finally got to sleep after 20 hours; got up 5 hours later. Hung out, fixed some minor stuff, went home happy. Best! Test! Evar!
