"Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."

My Boog Pages

Ah, there's nothing like the thrill of digging through a mound of cable heaped in the bottom of a server cabinet as you trace a cable from where it plugs into a power strip, only to end up at - another plug in another power strip. Looks like you took a wrong turn, Magellan.

The tangle in this case made to Gordian knot look like a tangles shoelace. Calling it a rat's nest is an insult to rats everywhere. "Snake pit" is a better description, especially since every time I stuck a hand in, I got bit, by one sharp edge or another.

And at the end, I added a bit of self-electroshock therapy when I managed to get my thumb across the metal of a particularly sticky plug. And I felt much better afterwards.

How did this happen? Years of neglect by those who came before me (I added a few month's worth on my own). Among other things I pulled out ten - TEN! - power cables that were connected to absolutely nothing. Where did those come from? I guess it was easier to run a new one.

And why was I doing this? To make sure there was enough power to add a new server. And what did I find? A power strip with five 5-amp connections plugged into it, as well as another power strip which itself had five 5-amp connections. That's 50 amps on a 20 amp connection. I have no idea why that cabinet is not in flames right now.

In Other News: Man, when Dave White rags on you for not updating, you know you need to get busy. For the record, I have only seen The Return Of The King three times since my last post (an The Two Towers twice).

Annie-ism Of The Day: My darling four year old managed to fall out of her chair while watching television in the kitchen. When my wife ran over and asked her, "What did you hit?" she replied "The floor!" As with most of her sayings, she's absolutely right and so wrong at the same time.
