And Now For Something Completely The Same...

Some more thoughts on Mulholland Drive... Many viewers have been confused by this movie, and even though there's a broad consensus on much of what happens, you can argue certain points 'til you're blue in the face (what is in that blue box?). One thing to keep in mind: when most of this movie was filmed, David Lynch expected it to be a pilot for a television series. The twists and turns introduced in the first 2/3 of the movie would have been developed over a season or two, and the explanations would have played out over that same span. When he decided to redevelop it as a feature, he presumably had to find a way to wrap up what he'd done that made some sort of sense. What I'm trying to say here is that even David Lynch didn't know where this film was going! Or, at least, he had to turn it in a new direction.

This has been my most productive week in some time. Last week was essentially wiped out by a) the mail server problems, and b) the W32.Klez virus, which we had all through the company. Our servers now update their virus definitions every hour, and workstations every four hours. This is a really nasty virus that spreads in a wide variety of ways: through email, through infected files, and even through unprotected network shares. This is one of the few viruses I've heard of that searches out and attacks drives not currently connected to the infected machine.

Anyway, I've made a lot of progress on some programming projects, and it's a really good feeling. I was starting to feel pretty damn useless.
